  1. The reason I selected this major was on total accident. I was going to become a Health Education major but saw a posting for this major on a bulletin board in Halenbeck Hall and decided to check it out so I took REC 133 and have stayed with this major ever since because I liked it. Sports are important to me because of the fact I grew up with them in my life and want to continue to be a part of sports for this rest of my life. I would what aspect of sport that best describes me is fan. I enjoy watching sports on TV and going to games in person. The part of sports that excite me would have to be winning. When you win or a team you like wins there is not better feeling then being on top.

  2. I selected this major because I have always loved recreation and sports. Sport is important to me because it is a big part of my life. I play and coach volleyball and it takes up a great deal of my free time. I coach year round pretty much, so overall I would describe myself as a coach. The most exciting part of sport to me is the last few seconds or points of any game. You can't beat the feeling of when a game goes into extra innings or overtime. It is also very interesting to know about rules and techniques of all different kinds of sports.

  3. I chose this major becuase I love to watch, participate, and coach sports. Pretty much all of my free time envolves sports. If im watching TV 90% of the time it's sports. I would describe myself as all 3 of those people. As a coach, participant and fan. I have coached sailing the last 6 summers and really enjoy passing on my knowledge to younger kids. I also have participated in sports my whole life mostly hockey, sailin, and lacrosse. I also am also a huge fan of a few teams especially the Green Bay Packers. The thing I like the most about sports is the fact that it is the one form of entertainment that can make me nervous or give me goosebumps. When one of my favorite team loses it puts me in a bad mood almost as if I had something to do with the out come of a game, and the same if one of my favorite team wins a big game.

  4. I chose this major primarily because the sports industry is something I enjoy and am very passionate about. I can see myself in a career involving one or more of these aspects and being a very productive individual because of that passion. I would say I am all of the above (fan, participant, and coach) I have coached hockey here in st. cloud and coached tennis for 6+ years back in my hometown, I watch just about every Vikings/Wild/Twins game, and I play hockey a few times a week and tennis/golf 4 or 5 times a week during the summer. Sport offers stress relief, exercise, entertainment, and opportunity for social interaction, mostly all good things, that is why I want to pursue a career in this industry.

  5. Since I can remember I have been involved with sport everyday of my life. Whether it be watching sports on tv, coaching them or participating in them. I love going to Twins games in the summer and watching the Vikings tear up the Pack! I would say participating in sports though has taught me the most about life. I love competition and winning but I also don't like to lose like many other people. Sport teaches you though how to accept a loss and how to work on your game to get better. Sport is great because it teaches you so many values in life. From hard work to dedication, sport covers so many categories. These are some of the reasons why I want to pursue this major.

  6. One of the reasons I chose sports management as my major is because of my passion for sports and recration, and want to make a career of it. Sports are important to me because of my parents and being involved in sports ever since I can remember. I would consider myself as a fan, participant, and a coach! Sports excite me because of the mystery of what is going to happen next, you never know what the outcome of a game is going to be.

  7. I selected this major because I have been involved with sports my whole life. I have both played in and coached two sports and have been a fan of many different sports my entire life. I believe sports can teach many different life lessons, such as learning how to deal with failure and how to win with good sportsmanship. I would probably describe myself mostly as a sports fan, I still participate in and coach a couple of sports, but I am a fan of many. The thing that excites me most about sports is the competition, it's about bringing all you have against your opponent bringing all they have and seeing who can come out on top.

  8. I selected this major because I have been involved in sports all of my life and I enjoy it a lot. I would not consider a job in sports a job either because it would be something I enjoy. I also feel it is a very important thing for the youth of our country as it teaches many life lessons and morals that one may not get in the classroom.

  9. I was undecided on what exactly I wanted to do for the rest of my life so I began looking at different majors st.cloud offered. I came across Rec and Sports Management and became interested. I talked to terri and took rec 133. During rec 133 I did my practicum at a recreation center and I decided I wouldn't mind doing something like that the rest of my life. Also, like everyone else so far, I have been around sports all my life (I spent a lot of time with my father). I started playing them as early as I could remember and was coaching by 7th grade. I'm a fan, participant, and a coach. I couldn't say which one best describes me because they all play an important and unique role in my life! Many things excite me about sports like the skill level needed, the commitment, the action, physical and mental health and wellness, positive impact on children, teaching new skills to children (and later see them doing it!), and etc...

  10. I chose this major because it was the only field I could see myself interested in pursuing in the near future and probably the rest of my life. Also, I realized the wide variety of career options involved with this field and the potential demand in the future especially in the health and fitness area. The great thing about sports is that there is a sport for everyone no matter what the situation or skill level. Right now, I would describe myself as a participant of sport. I am a huge fan of several different sports and I rarely miss an episode of around the horn or sportsnation. However, my main concern right now is training my body and mind for the upcoming season. What excites me most about sports is how unpredictable they are. I've been a part of men's league softball and intramural hockey games that have plays that could easily be top ten plays on sportscenter if they would have been videotaped. Moments like that are what keep sports exciting and in high demand all through the different age brackets.

  11. I chose the major because I wanted to stay in the sports industry. I would rather have fun going to my job rather than sit behind a desk all day. I see myself a being a fan, participant, and coach. Right now I'm making the transition from being primarily a participant and coach to primarily a coach and participant. The thing that exites me about sports is the competition between fans, players, coaches, and teams.

  13. I started out as a pre-business major, but soon realized that it wasn't for me. I had grown up around sports and decided it was best for me to stay around sports. I considered going for an athletic trainer, but I ended up deciding I would like the business side of sports more than the health side of it. Sport is important to me because when I was growing up sports were my way of forgetting everything that wasn't going right. I found it as a way to relax. I consider myself a fan, coach, and participant. The thing about sport that most excites me is the competition. Seeing the strategy to do what it takes to win a game is fun to watch.

  14. The reason I selected this major is becuase I have always had a passion for Recreation and Sports. Before recreation and sports management I was taking up athletic training. In high school I played hockey, football, and baseball. These sports have had a great influence on me and my career path. I would say I am a fan and a participant working towards becoming a coach. The reason sports are exciting is because you never know what will happen from day to day. There is nothing better than watching a football game that ends in a field goal or a hockey game that ends in a shoot-out. What excites me the most is the dedication and hard work it takes to become a great player and become a winner.

  15. The reason that I chose this major was because I wanted to have a job that I enjoy getting up for everyday. I started out wanting to engineering so I could make the big bucks but was quickly bored and decided it wasn’t for me. Sport is very important to me because I personally watch or participate in a sport every single day. Whether its watching football or shooting hoops in the gym, sports are always a part of my day. I think that all of them describe me because I coach little league, I love to watch and I played sports throughout my life. The thing that excites me the most is that you never know what is going to happen... there are always big upsets you don’t see coming and that is what makes it exciting.

  16. Like most others I chose this major because I have been around sports as far back as I can remember and have loved it. Sport is important to me because of the many benefits it offers and the fun it brings. I would describe myself as a fan and a participant. I often watch games on television, professional and college. The thing about sports that most excites me is watching the amazing performances that some individuals can accomplish.

  17. I have enjoyed reading your comments. As for me, while I have been a participant, coach, and spectator. I discovered that my true passion in sport is being a participant. That is why I got involved in sport and why I continue enjoying activities today.

As a sport marketer, how important is it to determine which category the consumer fits in?

Looking at the comments above, did you notice anything about this class as a consumer market?

  18. I chose this major by looking through the scsu catalog. It looked like it wold be fun and up my ally. Once I took a few classes for it I knew this is what I want to do. Sport is all around us, everywhere you go somehow your involed in sport. So why not by running the show. I participate as much as I can in sports, but i tend to be a fan. I also coached cross country for the last three years. What excites me the most is the adrenaline. Its a natural high. For me i enjoy outdoor sports more. After shooting down a duck my body shakes for a while. you cant get the feeling anywhere else.

  19. I chose this major based on a recommendation of a friend who was in the major. Sports have always been a major part of life ever since I started playing football for EP. So I decided to give it a try. I soon realized that sports are a billion dollar industry and I could make a nice living for myself. Sports are exciting and there is nothing more passionate than a sports fan.

  20. I chose this major because it has to do with sports which are basically my life outside of school. Sport is important because I like to stay as active as I can and the best way for me is to play sports. I am both a participant and a fan. Sports excite me so much because of my highly competitive side.

  21. I think it is very important to make sure what you are marketing fits into the demographic being pursued. By doing that you will maximize the success from your efforts. I noticed that a majority of the class are fans, however there are quite a few participants as well as a couple coaches. If I were to develop a marketing plan for the class, I would emphasize the fan category for whatever I am marketing.

  22. I chose this major because growing up I was involved with a variety of sports, mainly focusing on hockey. Not only did I play a lot of sports but I also watch a lot of sports on tv. Sports is an area in my life that I am very knowledgable and have a passion for. I think that sports are very important in everyones lives, whether people realize it or not. Since sports is something that I love and enjoy being around I think that I will be successful with any sports job I may get I love the competition, the feeling of hard work paying off by winning, learning to lose, making friends, learning to cooperate and to deal with advirsity.
