The Impact of Pete Carroll

Recently the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL hired Pete Carroll away from USC (click here for video). How will the hiring of Coach Carroll impact the Seahawks marketing of their product? Provide some specific ideas and examples. Also, how will hiring Coach Carroll change how products are marketed through sport in the Seattle area?

  1. I don't know much about the guy but it seems like he is an easily marketble coach. They say he is carismatic, rock star kind of guy. I am sure a good way to market him will be through his success as coach USC.

  2. Coach Carroll has made a huge impact on college football. He has become a great leader of one of the most recognizable and proclaimed teams in the game. With his impressive record, the players he has produced, and his style of coaching, Carroll has drawn fans from around the nation to rally around his him and his Trojans. With this being said, the Seahawks will have to market to a large college football fan base. Carroll's repuation will bring hope to this struggling franchise, despite his previous NFL experience. The fans want change, and Carroll's arrival will bring excitement to market to. It will give west coast football fans a common cause to gather around and could bring more fans to the stadium, especially if Carroll racks up wins early in the season. If the Seahawks do well enough, Seatle area businesses will want to be associated with Seahawks and will likely try to appeal to area football fans. However, if Carroll starts out slow, he will be slammed by critics and ESPN analysts as a coach unfit for the NFL because of his history as an NFL coach. If that happens, a negative energy will continue for the Seahawk orginization and the marketing team will continue to struggle.

  3. I think that because of Carroll's success at USC early on the people of Seattle will be excited and the Seahawks can use this to their advantage to bring people to the stadium on Sundays, but it still all depends on if the team wins. Carroll has always been a good recruiter, but has yet to shown he has what it takes to win at the professional level.

  4. I would have to agree with Kleve, Carroll's success at USC and his overall popularity are going to help the Seahawks fill seats and sell merchandise early on but what it ultimately boils down to is, can they win in order to keep the enthusiasm up? I'm not nescessarily sure that the hiring of coach Carroll will change how the products are marketed it will just make them easier to market.

  5. Scott and Spencer are right, college and professional sports are on whole different levels. I think he will come in strong but then really have to prove himself and win games. No one wants to go to games if the teams not winning. But at first i believe that he will put people in the seats. its something different and hes known as a great coach at USC. If he can turn the Seahawks around that stadium will be packed for a long time.

  7. Pete Carrol was a great coach in college, he will bring excitement to the Seatle Area early in his NFL coaching career. Howevere there is no gaurantee that his college success will carry over to his NFL career. Nick Saban great coach who has led to different college programs to National Championships, but he was a terrible NFL head coach with the Dolphins. In college the coach does every thing recruits players and makes most big decisions. In the NFL you have only so many draft picks so you cant just bring in a ton of good players in one year. I think that the first year he will make things easier to market for the Seahawks and they probably will sell more tickets

  8. Pete Carroll will have a positive impact on the Seahawks marketing. He had a ton of success as a college football coach at USC. There he was loved and had many fans across the nation. He is a die hard football fan and seems like he would do anything for his team. These are all qualities that the Seahawks organization will use to market to new and old fans. It will be interesting to see if they will sell more season tickets and sell out more games this upcoming NFL season. I agree with thdy0601 that it depends if Carroll wins or loses early in the season, which will cause either a positive or negative marketing impact on the team.

  9. It is hard to say how he will affect Seattle. He built USC into a powerhouse although there has been much speculation of recruiting violations and many other problems. Lately with USC he has been arguably the biggest underperforming team in the last 2 years. Link that with the fact that he has a record of losing to teams he should beat (ex. Stanford, Oregon State etc.) there is much to worry about with him. He has also been a head coach in the NFL before. He did not fair well with the Jets in his first stint and did moderately with the Patriots in his second stint with a team that was constructed by Bill Parcels. The Seahawks have a lot of room to improve and I believe they hired Carroll as a name and hopefully to bring in more fans. I think overall the Seahawks will be at best a middle of the road team and Carroll's impact will be more as a name than an actual coach. He is now in a league where every team pays their players, not just his.

  10. I think the hiring of Coach Carroll was good and might be helpful to marketing this team. They are only a couple years removed from a Super Bowl. Granted things change over the years and Jim Mora Jr. the former head coach didnt fair too well with his former team the Atlanta Falcons. I think this was a good hire because people on the west coast know about Pete Carroll and his success at USC. Some classmates have commented on his career as an NFL coach prior was not very good record wise, but I believe he has a 34-31 record overall. Which is not great but its above .500 which is better than some coaches can say. I think with his winning tradition and better understand of the game now I think Pete Carroll was a good hire for this team at this time.

  11. I think Pete Carroll's initial impact on the Seattle Seahawks will be the most he has on them. He is obviously a huge name in the college game with two national championships and the most winning percentage in the last nine years as a head coach, but it is much different in the NFL. I think the season ticket holders of the team will slightly increase and the first few games will be pretty packed so that the people can decide if they like Pete Carroll as their head coach; this of course will come down to if he wins or not. Also I believe that his "soft" style of coaching is great in the college game, but wont last long again in the NFL.

  12. Pete Carroll has always been appealing to younger generations; all you have to do is look at his recruiting classes during his time at USC. Because of this the Seahawks may begin to market their products towards a younger market in Seattle. I also think fans in Washington will be excited to have him on their side finally instead of playing against his teams on Saturdays. This will lead to an increase in both merchandise sales and ticket sales early on. If Carroll can get his team to be successful the Seahawks should have no problem filling the stadium but if he struggles like his previous years in the NFL the organization will quickly go back to what it was before Carroll was the head coach.

  13. The addition of Pete Carroll will definitely help the Seahawks to market their product, and he should have an immediate impact. The combination of his prior professional experience and recent collegiate success makes him a viable head coaching candidate. That, along with his community efforts and leadership and life values(as seen on video from 415) makes him a very positive person to put at the helm of a struggling franchise. The Seahawks are in a very weak division right now and if they can get the in house issues corrected they will have a legitimate chance to compete for the division title. Whether Carroll will be the right fit remains to be seen over the next few years, but in the present and near future, he will be a very popular person among the local and national media.

  14. I'm sure that pete carroll's addition to the seahawks will increase the target market population by bringing in fans from all over. His prior success will also draw more fans in to see if the seahawks will have a successful season. If they have a successful season sport products will be marketed through winning championships instead of loyalty in the Seatle area.

  15. The Seahawks loyal fans will still follow the team even though their record wasn't too good. If they are trying to attract new fans they need to market to Pete Carroll's fan base which is primarily at the college level. They Seahawks may try to market to the upper California area because of the addition of their new coach.

  17. With the hiring of new head coach Pete Carroll, the Seahawks will now have a completely different marketing plan for the next few years. He will now be the new face of the organization, appearing on ticket stubs, billboards, souveneir cups and much more. The Seattle area will also have a big change seen throughout the area as the Seahawks will now be the buzz and Carroll will be the reason for this. It will be easier to market the Seahawks games this year as fans will want to see what this new pheneomena is all about.

  18. I would have to agree with Kleve and Spencer, it all boils down to winning. Pete Carroll's success at USC was one of a kind but if he can't continue that in the pro's it will be killer to the Seahawks organization. As of now, marketing its great for Seahawks but the tables can turn very quickly if Coach Carroll can't produce.

  19. Being a Brett favre fan I can see many fans of Pete Carrol himself watching attending and putting more attention and money in the seahawks team now. The marketing will not only be targeted towards seajawk fans. Not only will it attract more people to games but also the media will be on Pete and the team as well the first year to either talk him up or tear them apart

  20. I think having Pete Carroll as the Seahawks coach is going to be a great thing for their team. I would assume they will draw much more attention and success to their team which will in turn bring on a larger fan base. Any football fan most likely knows who Pete Carroll is, so they will probably use him as a marketing tool as well. Advertising Pete as part of the seahawks is sure to get them the publicity they are looking for.

  21. Having Pete Carroll as their head coach is definitely a marketing plus for the Seahawks. He has gained quite a good reputation as USC's coach over the years, and this will help for advertising of the Seahawks. Since Carroll has such a good track record, his fans will start to follow the Seahawks (as well as USC perhaps.) However, if the Seahawks do not perform well with Carroll leading them, they may need to think of alternative ways to market.

  22. I think it is hard to say how big of an impact Pete Carroll will have on the Seattle Seahawks. He has not had previous success in the NFL, and has recently been underachieving at USC. However, with the Seahawks recent sruggles I believe he will be able to bring more fans to the stadium and there will be an increase in merchandise sales. It really all depends on whether or not Pete Carroll can help the Seahawks win games. If they don't win games they will have just as many consumers as they do now.

  23. The Seahawks have an opportunity to shake things up with their fan base now that Pete Carroll is the head coach. Carroll was notorious for being a great promoter of his school while at USC. I think that hiring Carroll will energize the Seattle fan base immediately. Whether or not he will be a successful NFL coach is another question.

  24. With the Seahawks bringing in Carroll I think that it will help bring in more fans. He was given himself a good name being the coach at USC and his success there. Pete will definately bring in a lot of marketing for the Seahwakks and will continue to be as long as he has a successful season at the Seahawks.

  25. Carroll will only last 2 years at best in the NFL and then end up back at USC or another college. He is a great college coach but as others have failed in the past transitioning to the NFL level such as Steve Spurrier for example, Carroll will also not do well. College and NFL are just totally different. The marketing for Seattle Seahawks will start out well cause of the hype but as the season progresses and Carroll cannot lead them to many victories, the marketing will decline
