Red Turf

Eastern Washington University is looking to mimic the blue turf of Boise State. Based on class discussion and readings, what are some ideas on how you might entice consumers to a football game with the new “red turf?” Think through the four C’s.

  1. I think if you look at the four C's, it is obvious that this makes a big change for EWU. The consumer will be transformed from people maybe just going to watch a football game, to consumers who want to view the stadium as a product itself. EWU will have something unique that not many of their competitors will have. It is a unique stadium and this unique product is something that will give them a one up on others. The company itself doesn't really change, but it will become more well known because EWU will be the ones with the "Red Turf" The climate is still the same as it was before the stadium, but it looks as though the economy is starting to look up so this should also help improve their product.

  2. The consumer can now be people that are interesting in coming to the stadium to see the red turf. The new fans may not even be fans of EWU. As of right now there are no other competitor with red turf. EWU is the only team that can offer this. The opportunity for fans is to experience something they cannot experience anywhere else.

  3. The climate won't change at all because that is created by the fans and team and the turf doesn't really effect that. However the consumer which is the fans will increase because of the need to see something new and unique. Just the fact that the turf is red is enough to entice many more people to attend games. At least for a season anyways until they get used to it.

  4. A red field. I am curious if it has any effects on the fans or players vision afterwards from seeing so much red. As far as the Competition there is none. The field would be one of a kind. I would agree with the other posts that the field would bring non fans as well as the fans of EWU. It will be a tourist attraction. Marketing the field will be fairly easy due to it being the one of a kind red turf anywhere. Climate being the nations economic state i don't think will have a big impact. The great thing about sports and rec is that people will spend money to partake in a good time. There will be the regular fan base at the games and then some due to the attraction of the unique field.

  5. I think Mark said it very well. The only real (C) that is going to change is the consumer. EWU is going to have the opportunity to draw from a totally different fan base. No longer are they only attracting EWU fans but they will soon be able to draw fans from all over who are more or less just interested in seeing the new red turf.

  6. The Consumers may want become because the field will be unique and different. The climate won't really change just because of a red field the fans make the climate. I don't think the red field is a great idea it would get extremely hot when the sun is out just like at Boise's blue field.

  7. Because of a red field I dont think this will effect the company or climate. The only effect in which it would have an impact on would be the consumers because of their team spirit or being the team with the attractive "red field". Although a red field may have downfalls towards comsumers who may be irritated by the color change since it is not 'normal' mainly towards the older crowd.

  8. The new red field at EWU will definitley bring in some new fans just for the curiosity factor. Loyal fans for EWU won't be the big change that they are probably looking for, but for the general public in the area to attend games. It will also bring them some noteriety just like the blue turf at Boise State has. It'll be something very unique that will add homefield advantage for EWU and i think the fans will definitley get behind the idea. This could be the start of a national trend to make everyone's home field their main color to attract fans and provide that homefield advantange.

  9. I agree with most everyone else. The consumer will increase greatly. The consumer is not just football fans and students anymore, but also people who are just interested in seeing a unique field. One thing I didn't think of at first was that the color of the field could have a negative impact. After reading some of the other posts I will be interested if the color does irritate some people.

  10. EWU will bring in a whole new fan base to their home games after the new turf is installed. This consumer will not necessarily be a fan of EWU but a fan of unique facilities, and this will definitely be one. I don't think the interest would last very long though. The thing that makes Bosie State's situation unique is not only the color of the field but also the success of the team. EWU is not near that talent level. I think EWU would just become the team with the red field and then hope to attract visitors because of that.

  11. I think the red field will help bring in more consumers but it will not change the climate that much. I think the red field will get alot of attention at first but that attention will not last long if the team doesn't produce. I also agree with eric about the field having a negative effect on the team if the turf gets to hot during games. This could cause poor performance and eventually effect potiental consumers.

  12. The consumer market could increase due to the interest in the new turf. The company doesn't change all that much except for maybe marketing advertisments. The new turf would give EWU an advantage over many of their competitors, in regards to attracting consumers. I don't believe the climate would change at all unless Boise State would sue them for copying them, but I don't think they can do that...?

  13. I think that the consumer size would increase because of the curiosity to see the red turf in person, this includes old fans as well as new fans of the team. This might become a tourist attraction bringing in people from all over the country. The competition will stay the same, but it might cause other teams to do the same and possibly change the color of their turf if it proves to be a success to the football program.

  14. I believe that the consumer will drastically increase simply due to the fact that there is no other field like it. It will be the only Red turfed field in the country and people will be willing to spend some extra cash to go and see it. Who knows, maybe it will even help in getting some bigger name recruits in the future as well!

  15. It looks like the consumer will change. You will still have the fans that are there to just see the game but at the same time you will be bringing in new fans to see the red turf. The competition wont change much, if at all. It will just EWU a competitive advantage over the other schools. I dont see the climate changing because the field color is different. I enjoy seeing Bosie States field so hopefully this will turn out as well.

  16. I think that the red turf is a very good idea to market the team. Having a red field opens up several new advertising and promotional possibilities. The only red field in the nation is enticing just by itself. It will draw attention from a much larger audience. This is definitely a risky option but I like the fact that they are being innovative and committing to new ideas. College football has steadily been evolving into a league completely driven by money and profits. If teams are going to keep pace they are going to have to take some chances.

  17. Eastern Washington has dramatically changed their marketing mix by switching to a red field. The 'p' one most changed is promotion. By being the first college to have a red field they are creating national headlines and gaining a lot of notoriety. Their product has also changed, people will be lured to their stadium for the spectacle of a red field causing their product to change as well. People think of this as a gimmick but it is rather a savvy marketing move.

  18. The university will probably get more consumers out to the game to see the turf. What I don't understand is if they are trying to sell the team or the turf. By putting this turf in you are going to get people that want to go just see the turf and not follow the team. They will probably get many one time consumers but won't get people to keep coming back for the turf. The competition might increase with other schools to put new colored turf down before another university if this marketing strategy were to work. I also think it won't effect the climate and the company laying the turf could see a dramatic increase in their business if the strategy works out for ewu. I think it is a little different then Boise States situation because there team contends towards the top of college football every year and they get national exposure at their field and I'm sure EWU won't get that same media coverage but who knows.
